Pedro Pascal, best known as Oberyn “The Red Viper” Martell on HBO’s critical and ratings giant “Game of Thrones”, has been cast in a new original series for Netflix. Deadline reports that Mr. Pascal will be a major player in the upcoming Netflix original series Narcos, a historical drama about infamous drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. Pascal will be playing Javier Pena, a mexican drug enforcement officer who is recruited by the US to kill Escobar. Narcos will pit Pascal’s Pena against Wagner Moura’s (Elysium) Escobar in a bloody conflict at the height of the wild growth of Cocaine cartels across the world between the late 1970s and early 1990s.
Pedro Pascal discussing getting the job on Game of Thrones
Pedro Pascal exploded in popularity thanks to his performance as Oberyn Martell on Game of Thrones. Fans of the show quickly grew attached to the passionate, charismatic, and sly presence of Pascal’s Oberyn, an outside threat to the scheming denizens of King’s Landing.
Interestingly, Netflix and HBO are in heated competition to be the most relevant name in original video content. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings once famously stated “The goal is to become HBO faster than HBO can become us.” HBO recently put their streaming content on Netflix rival Amazon Prime, and Netflix’s Hastings has made several… eh… friendly… jabs at HBO in the press.
Narcos will hit Netflix in 2015. Pedro Pascal can also be seen in USA’s Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe and Graceland, as well as The Mentalist and the Goode Wife on CBS.
