Game of Thrones Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss recently chatted with Entertainment Weekly about where season 5 will take the smash hit HBO fantasy drama. Concerns were raised about the show catching up with the books, as elements of the 4th and 5th (the most recent book released) have already begin to appear in the series. GRR Martin, the author of the book series upon which Game of Thrones is based, is notorious for the slow pace of his books releases and still has 2 more tomes to complete in the series. Addressing these concerns they stated that “We have talked to George extensively about where he’s going with the books, and will continue to do so. His books are the blueprint for the world we’re building. Ultimately the show needs to work on its own terms, and keep on moving. Our job is to square that necessity with George’s work to the best of our ability.”
Most notable in the interview was the talk of Dorne. Season 4 gave us our first tastes of the Dornish people through the charismatic Prince Oberyn Martell (played beautifully by Pedro Pascal) and his mistress Ellaria Sand, who amde their way to King’s Landing to attend the wedding of King Joffrey, but got caught up in the deadly machinations of the city’s devious leaders. It has been confirmed that in season 5 we will see Dorne itself for the first time as well as Oberyn’s infamous bastard daughters “the Sand Snakes” (Bastards of Dorne are named Sand, and Oberyn was known as the “Red Viper”) his brother Doran (the Ruler of Dorne) and nephew Trystane (who is engaged to Myrcella Baratheon). “There will be Dorne, and we’re excited about it. Who wouldn’t want to hang out in Dorne? They have admirable values and priorities. And have you seen Oberyn’s coat?” Scenes for Dorne will be filmed in Spain.
