Lots of news came out of the Hannibal panel today at the San Diego Comic Con. Series Creator and Showrunner Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls) was on stage to talk up the upcoming 3rd season of the gorgeously gruesome series.
Please note, this piece will contain minor spoilers, I will hold back from the one more major spoiler revealed at the panel, but smaller spoilers will be present.
Fuller revealed that many popular characters from the books would be debuting in the series this season, specifically noting that Commander Pazzi would be introduced in the second episode of the season, with Lady Murasaki in episode 3, and Dr. Cordell in episode 4. It was also confirmed that Abel Gideon (played by Eddie Izzard), who we last saw feasting on his own legs, would be returning in the 3rd season for a flashback.
Chronologically, season 3 will take place after a 1 year time skip from the horrific events of last season’s finale, with the 4th episode filling in the gap by means of flashbacks. Fuller has previously stated that the first episode of the season would pick up immediately after the final scene of last season’s finale. We do not know if a year has passed from that point, or from the end of the previous scene, which saw much of the cast in dire circumstances, though we can assume the latter.
The original plan for the series as a whole was to run 7 seasons, but Fuller has compressed that down to 6, as a result season 3 will fit into 2 distinct parts, each with a beginning , middle, and end.
When asked about the atrocious Emmy snub, Fuller said it was disappointing to see so many talented people work so hard and not be recognized, though he acknowledged the stiff competition, and mentioned other high profile snubs, such as The Walking Dead. “There’s such amazing television shows now.” Said Showrunner Bryan Fuller, “We really are in such a fantastic golden era.”
