Community got an eleventh-hour reprieve in its save by Yahoo for a sixth season this year, and with it came one more (perhaps final?) chance to visit Comic Con. Dan Harmon and the cast took to the stage in Ballroom 20 to discuss the new season, and all that came with the ups and downs of cancellation, and then the last-minute save.
Among other things, Dan Harmon did explain that the show will keep to its traditional sitcom format, and not veer off into something radically new and different, even with the change in platform. It will also have the previously-confirmed 13 episodes, which will be released on a weekly basis likely sometime after Christmas.
Joel McHale talked about the devastation of losing the show, but expressed his continuing optimism during the weeks in-between that it would be saved, even as Harmon himself was preparing fans for the likelihood that 5th season really was the end. “I had no doubt we would be back,” McHale said. “Much like a Japanese general in World War II, the only option was victory or suicide. As I’ve said a lot, I love the show.”
Cast members Gillian Jacobs and Jim Rash both discussed learning of the show’s save on Twitter, and how emotional they became at both the cancellation and renewal from Yahoo. Continuing to demonstrate that the people who make this show clearly love it every bit as much as the fans do.
