There are several stories that you might have missed in the floods of information of the last couple of days.
First, Amazon has disclosed their budget for original series for the 3rd quarter of the year. Amazon intends to spend $100 Million to compete with Netflix in the original content game. Netflix has been dominating all other online platforms when it comes to original content, thanks to smash hits and critical darlings such as House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Amazon has, on the other hand, mostly struggled to find a market for their original series. Taking a different approach from Netflix, Amazon orders a slew of pilots and then has Amazon Prime subscribers voice their opinions on their favorites. So far this hasn’t paid off well for them as many of their pilots have been rather uninspired. This year, however, Amazon has quite a few big contenders. From a series based on a novel by Philip K. Dick to a project from Director Steven Soderburgh, Amazon is paying the big bucks to find their House of Cards.
Next up, 1 of my favorite movies of all time has a TV series in development. Sam Raimi announced at Comic Con this year that he, his brother Ivan, and cult legend Bruce Campbell are developing a TV series version of The Evil Dead. Last year, a successful reboot of the first film was produced by Raimi and Campbell. Campbell just came off of a long run on USA’s Burn Notice, and Raimi is currently producing a motion picture adaptation of The Last of Us.
Lastly, the opening titles for Starz upcoming series Outlander was released by the cable channel. Outlander is based on the books by Diana Gabaldon, the series is being handled by Ron Moore (Batlestar Galactica, Caprica)
