Netflix announced in it’s fourth quarter 2014 earnings call that they plan to increase their original content output and expand rapidly across Europe in 2015 while continuing their DVD by mail service. Right now the company streams to 50 countries including Switzerland, Austrailia, Belgium and France but Netflix anticipates that number rising to 200 in the coming year.
Netflix argues that expansion is good as it’ll bring in more revenue to produce more original content which is cheaper for Netflix because they don’t have to pay expensive streaming fees that they pay to stream popular shows and movies produced by others. In addition to it’s current lineup of original shows the company is planning new programming such as The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Bloodline and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny, Netflix’s first original feature film. Netflix says it plans to release 320 hours of original programming in 2015 three times the amount it produced last year. Not so bad for what was originally a DVD by mail service.
