The Wall Street Journal informs that a live action series based on the hugely popular videogame franchise The Legend of Zelda is rumored to be in the works at Netflix according to a source close to the publication. The source says that Netflix is describing the project as Game of Thrones for a family audience. Netflix is in the process of seeking writers for the project and is said to be working closely with Nintendo although the project is in the early stages and could be squashed by either party at any time.
The Legend of Zelda is a massively popular Nintendo game series having sold over 52 million copies worldwide since the series inception. Taking place in a fantasy world the series stars Link who must save a princess the titular Zelda from an evil sorcerer named Ganon. Nintendo is usually very protective of it’s properties and doesn’t often allow adaptations. The last major live action adaptation of a popular Nintendo property The Super Mario Bros film was a major critical and commercial flop.
