Today I was given the opportunity to talk to Peter Jacobson (House) in a press conference call for the USA series Colony. Jacobson portrays Proxy Alan Snyder, a collaborator to the mysterious alien presence that has conquered, and now occupies, Earth. Jaconson’s Snyder is the outwardly prickly and opportunistic leader of the Los Angeles colony.
Jacobson has played a lot of prickly characters since his role as Dr. Taub on Fox’s hit medical series House. He is unsure as to why he has become so attracted to these kinds of charcaters as he doesn’t see himself, as a person, in the same light as them. For his role as Proxy Snyder in Colony, Jacobson was attracted to the character as an unlikely wielder of power. He is interested in Snyder’s role as an nontraditional, and mysterious, villain.
Jacobson believes that there is much more to Snyder than the surface level opportunistic collaborator that we currently know him as. Snyder has a family, which plays a role in the choices he makes. Snyder has claimed altruistic intentions on the show, stating that what he is doing is right for the colony’s future. Jacobson believes that Snyder’s assertions are genuine, and that Snyder believes, to his core, that he is in the right. Though Snyder believes he is in the right, he also enjoys the power he has, and Jacobson enjoys playing that aspect of Snyder’s character.
Tomorrow’s episode of the series, Yoknapatawpha, has a larger focus on Snyder, and we will learn a lot more about him. Jacobson warns, however, that what Snyder says might not be completely true. The Actor stated that Yoknapatawpha is his favorite episode of the season.
As for the series as a whole, Jacobson says that we will learn a bit more about the invasion this season, but that the second season will present even bigger answers. That being said, Jacobson admits that he only gets scripts an episode or 2 ahead of what they are filming, and that he doesn’t have anything from season 2 yet. One thing we will be seeing from Snyder in season 1 of the series is his panic over the death of Phyllis, which has dispelled the illusion of safety in the green zone.
When asked about his personal interests and what else he is working on, Jacobson says that he loves watching TV, but that the sheer number of great shows can be intimidating to him. His current favorites include House of Cards, The Americans (which he will be appearing in this season), and Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia (which he has appeared in before). He admits that he has not seen Breaking Bad, which he feels ashamed of, but says it is the next show on his list. Jacobson was asked which medium he prefers working in, between Film, TV, and Theater. Though Theater was his first love, he currently finds himself more interested in TV due to the intimacy of the work. Jacobson also mentioned his current addiction to Twitter, and how live tweeting allows him immediate interaction with those who watch his shows.
I would like to thank Peter Jacobson and USA for their time today. Colony airs Thursday nights on USA. Do you have any thoughts about Colony or this piece? Tell us in our comments, and stay tuned to TVEnthusiast for more coverage of Colony, and all of your favorite shows.
