In an effort to hook potential fans, premium network Showtime has released the first episode of the 3rd season of Showtime’s Victorian horror drama series Penny Dreadful, for free, on YouTube. Penny Dreadful, which we have previously covered in our show recommendation article series Spotlight. In the article, I described Penny Dreadful as such:
Penny Dreadful is a horror cross-over series set in Victorian England. With characters from Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and more, Penny Dreadful takes advantage of the strange coincidence, that many of these works were written within years of each other. All of the characters brought into the series from these various works have become significant, iconic, and enduring presences in pop culture. Using the environments that fostered the Authors of these works to cross them over is what makes Penny Dreadful work. Penny Dreadful’s plot takes the various existing character connections to Dracula and Lucifer to craft a greater underlying conspiracy.
The official broadcast premiere of Penny Dreadful‘s 3rd season kicks off on Sunday, May 1st, but the first episode is already available on YouTube, and even embedded in this very article.
