Well that is it, Comic Con 2016 has come to an end, and now it is time to take a look back at what excited us the most. As such, this week’s edition of TVEnthusiast’s Top 10 Tuesday is all about the best trailers to come out of the 2016 San Diego International Comic Con.
Though the trailer itself didn’t inspire as much excitement as many of the others this year, the fact that Sherlock is coming back did. We have been without Sherlock for far too long, and it is time for another dose.
Preacher is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows of 2016. The trailer for the rest of season 1 isn’t quite as exciting as others on this list, but that is largely because we are almost through the season and there isn’t much they can show to inspire wonder. That being said, the trailer was still a lot of fun and hinted at adventures yet to come for our troubled Preacher, Irish Vampire, and… well I can’t come up with a 2 word title to describe Tulip… but yes, definitely her too.
08. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
Though the trailer doesn’t seem to show the true nature of the book series, yet, it does display some excellent performances by, and chemistry between, Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful) and Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings). We just have to wait and see what kind of series Max Landis (Chronicle) makes out of this classic Douglas Adams (Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) book series.
07. The Expanse
SyFy’s best current series, The Expanse, is an exciting return to form for the network who previously brought us Battlestar Galactica. Finally moving on from ghost hunter reality shows, SyFy has fully embraced the genre entertainment they were originally named for, before an unfortunate re-branding that is. This trailer for The Expanse‘s second season doesn’t exactly give us a lot to chew on, but that is the way I like it, I want the show itself to be what draws me in.
06. The Walking Dead
With a huge cliffhanger looming over their comic con panel this year, we couldn’t expect much information from The Walking Dead this year at Comic Con. As I predicted, the trailer on hand largely focused on people outside of Rick’s group of survivors, and while there was fun to be had, nothing really… WAIT! WTF? … IS THAT A F’N TIGER?! Forget what I just said, I am in.
I am not even sure if this is a proper Comic Con trailer or not, but regardless, it came out in the right time frame, and it is f’n awesome. Narcos was a surprisingly fun presentation of a shockingly dark story, and season 2 can’t come soon enough. Thankfully, the weight is rather short, as season 2 drops, in its entirety, in September.
04. Ash Vs. Evil Dead
Perfect casting, quick pacing, moments that already make me smile and/or laugh out loud, Ash Vs Evil Dead‘s second season trailer was released just before Comic Con, and yet managed to stand out as one of the best we saw from the show. Gore, beer, parties, horror, excellent one liners, bleached blonde Ted Raimi (Xena: Warrior Princess), and a delightfully short appearance by Lee Majors (The Six Million Dollar Man) as Ash’s father. It is safe to say that the this trailer did not disappoint.
03. Luke Cage
Badass, that 1 word cleanly describes the first true Luke Cage trailer. Cage’s somewhat lazy and bored fighting style that so perfectly matches a character with his abilities, impressed us when the character appeared in Jessica Jones last year. It is great to see that the style makes a return in a scene that acts as the antithesis of Daredevil‘s beloved hallway fight scene. Cage, bored, and holding a car door, effortlessly works his way through a group of thugs in a way that would surely make Matt Murdoch envious. It was a thing of beauty.
FX and Marvel made news when they somehow managed to cooperate for the creation of a live action X-Men universe TV series. Now, we at last had a glimpse at the fruit of their efforts. Noah Hawley (Fargo) delivered the biggest surprise of Comic Con with this delightfully disjointed peak at the fractured mind of an omega level (read: super powerful) mutant with dissociative identity disorder. It was everything we should have expected from a Noah Hawley project, and yet took us by surprise as it leapfrogged what we expected from an X-Men related TV series.
01. American Gods
Our most anticipated trailer of Comic Con 2016 did not disappoint. I had chills run down my arm as the reality began to sink in. This is real! Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) has yet to make a bad show, and it looks like American Gods is pretty damn far from being his first. With a stunningly perfect cast, a great song choice, and the look and feel we have come to expect from a Bryan Fuller/David Slade (Hannibal) collaboration, American Gods left our jaws on the floor, and our fingers outstretched. Please sir, may we have some more?
Comic Con was good this year, due, in so small part, to the amazing trailers we got out of it. What did you think? What trailers caught your attention? Let us know by posting your thoughts in our comments, and stay tuned to TVEnthusiast for more coverage of all of your favorite shows.
